St Mary’s has a tradition of a robed choir leading the singing for Sunday worship. The choir is affiliated to the RSCM. Highlights during the year are the Harvest Festival Evening service and the Carol Service. Special rehearsals are organised for these events and we welcome additional singers. The choir leads the regular Parish Communion on the 1st and 4th Sundays and also on the 2nd Sunday an Iona Communion service for which they provide an informal lead from the back of the church.
On Sunday 6th September 2015 we said goodbye to Carol Watson, our organist for the last 5+ years, who is moving away from the area. We owe her an enormous debt of gratitude for all she has done for the Church and the Choir. Thank you, Carol, we will miss you enormously.
In Carol’s place we have welcomed Melvin Hughes, Organist & Choirmaster at St. Michael’s, Betchworth, who will be with us on the first and fourth Sundays of each month, the third (and 5th) Sundays being joint services with Betchworth, and the second Sunday being the Iona service, for each of which other arrangements are made. Melvin will also play for us on special occasions as well as Weddings and Funerals.
For a good many years now Gaynor Day has been in charge of the choir and as such has done a marvellous job. A few months ago she told us that she would like to take a sabbatical from singing in, and administering, the choir, and this sabbatical will start shortly. Thank you, Gaynor, but we do hope your sabbatical will be enjoyable—and short!
This means that we would like to recruit some new singers so if you would like to join our small but enthusiastic choir please talk to the Rector, Organist, or indeed to any existing member of the Choir, or to one of the Churchwardens.
